Varmint Hunts

Phillip Bowers and son, Easton

Varmint hunting is fast becoming the off season “thing to do” while passing the time waiting for the fall big game season to return. By itself or in preparation for an upcoming fall elk or deer hunt, varmint hunts allow the prospective hunter the ability to enjoy wildlife viewing, fantastic private land western wildlife habitat, and unequaled varmint shooting opportunity in a totally relaxed non-competitive atmosphere.

The number one animal that our varmint hunts target is the coyote. Coyotes are not only numerous but, in some areas, overpopulated to the point of being a nuisance to both ranchers and wildlife populations.

Our method of hunting coyote is spot and stalk and calling. Electronic calling is the most exciting method of hunting coyotes and lack of hunting makes them especially susceptible to a variety of calls that are available. We recommend a flat shooting varmint caliber and many varmint hunters bring along a shotgun for close range shots. Bobcats will respond to electronic calls as readily as coyotes. Bobcats, however, are classified as fur-bearing animals in Montana and are illegal to take by nonresidents.

Additional varmints available are prairie dogs, gophers and any animal not classified as fur-bearing such as: badger, porcupine, raccoon, and fox. Prairie dogs and gophers run a close second to coyotes in popularity and are generally hunted in early spring when the weather starts to warm a bit and the turkeys start their spring ritual. Combining a spring Merriam turkey hunt with varmint hunting is a very popular option.

Varmint hunts are conducted from a base camp or motel. The actual hunting takes place on our private land hunting leases. Included in the hunt is all camp accommodations, all meals during the hunt, and all transportation and guiding during the hunt. Not included in the price of the hunt are motel accommodations before, during, or after the hunt and soft drinks or alcohol. Alcohol may be used in moderation after the days hunting activities have concluded.

Varmint hunts are booked for 3 day time periods at $1500.00. We can tailor a hunt for either individuals or groups for longer periods if desired. A 50% non-refundable deposit is required at the time of booking. The balance is due 30 days prior to the hunt dates. Please Contact us directly for available dates.
